Parents provide career information

News | 26 Nov 2015

What does a concern controller or occupational psychologist do? And, what does your day look like as a judge, primary school teacher or general practitioner? Which study did you follow if you became an Industrial Cost Engineer or shipbuilding project leader by profession? This is now a lot clearer for the students at CSG Liudger havo/vwo location Raai. With the help of parents of students, the location organized a career information course, intended to help students make a choice for further study.

The students could register for two different information rounds by the parents. The evening also consisted of two plenary sessions in the atrium of the school, hosted by mayor Tjeerd van Bekkum of Smallingerland and Kor Visscher, co-director of Philips Drachten. They contributed to the evening by telling in front of a full atrium about the road they traveled from high school to now. They talked about the choices they made and the studies they followed. They also answered questions from the students, such as: What is so nice or not so nice about the position? What does a working day look like?

Mieke van Schepen, dean of the havo at the Raai location, looks back on the evening with satisfaction and is pleased with the large number of registrations from parents who cooperated in the evening: ,,In our view, this method has nothing but advantages. We connect theory with practice. In doing so, we make use of valuable knowledge from our own network, namely the knowledge of our parents. In this way we not only involve parents in education, but we also make education together.”
