Junior Maintenance Technician (Jr. Support engineer)

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of our radio telescopes and ensuring their smooth operation. You are also responsible for rectifying equipment malfunctions, performing standard maintenance and keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Job description

As a maintenance technician you work independently on the LOFAR telescopes after a solid learning period. It concerns standard maintenance work, where you assess the functioning of the telescope on site, but a malfunction can also be a reason for a visit. You are supported by computer systems and your team.

We are always looking to improve processes, there is certainly room for your own input here. LOFAR telescopes are located in nature reserves, it is a great advantage if you are an outdoorsman. Outdoor work takes place from spring to autumn, in winter you work indoors. LOFAR is a software-controlled radio telescope, so you must have knowledge of electronics, computers and networks. Knowledge of HF and Linux is an advantage, but not a requirement.

LOFAR has 38 stations in the Northern Netherlands, but also a number in Europe. You also maintain these stations. You must be prepared to be away from home for a few days a few times a year to do this maintenance together with a colleague.

Education requirements

  • For the Junior Maintenance Technician position: MBO
  • For the Maintenance Technician position: MBO+
  • Electrical engineering

Technical content knowledge

  • Knowledge of electronics
  • Knowledge of network systems
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of the English language in word and writing
  • In possession of driving license B and preferably BE
  • VCA basic safety certificate is an advantage
  • Knowledge of HF and Linux is an advantage

  • For the Junior Maintenance Technician position: No work experience required
  • For the Maintenance Technician position: Several years of experience in a technical environment

Other

  • Willing to work abroad for periods of 3 to 4 days 3 times per summer season (May-October).

We offer:

  • A contract (38 hours a week) for one year with the prospect of extension if functioning properly;
  • For the Junior Maintenance Technician position: A salary in accordance with scale 7 CLA WVOI (€ 2,515 – € 3,409), depending on relevant experience;
  • For the Maintenance Technician position: A salary in accordance with scale 8 or 9 collective labor agreement WVOI (€ 2,875 - € 4,358), depending on relevant experience;
  • In addition to good primary employment conditions such as an end-of-year bonus of 8,33% of the gross annual salary and 42 vacation days (full-time contract), we also offer you excellent secondary employment conditions, including a solid pension scheme (ABP) and travel allowance;
  • With us you also benefit from a flexible package of employment conditions, specifically aimed at your situation. For example, you can decide for yourself whether you want to sell extra vacation days.

The organisation:

ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, promotes the development of our knowledge of the universe. We do this by conducting basic astronomical research and developing and operating advanced technologies and instrumentation for radio astronomical research. ASTRON is part of the institutes organization of NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research). ASTRON is located just outside Dwingeloo in Drenthe. It employs about 200 scientists, technicians and operational staff. It is an international community in which the Telescoop Operations group occupies a place of its own.
