Innovatie R&D Werktuigbouwkunde Material Finite element analysis (FEA)

Assignment Objective
In this assignment, you will investigate how material models are created and applied in simulations. The focus will be on analyzing different modelling methods and testing them under varying speeds, which correspond to different strain rates. The materials to be studied include ABS, PA, and other plastics commonly used in consumer products.

Your simulations will help evaluate the accuracy and limitations of these models. The results will be particularly useful for improving the reliability of drop test simulations, such as those performed on beard trimmers and shaving devices.

Key Challenge
The main challenge you will face is selecting appropriate modelling approaches when only limited material data is available. A crucial part of the task is to assess what level of accuracy can still be achieved under these constraints.

Tasks

  • Research – Study methods for creating plastic material models and identify their limitations.
  • Modeling – Build material models (e.g., inverse or analytical approaches).
  • Simulation – Run impact test simulations in LS-DYNA at different speeds/strain rates.
  • Validation – Perform physical tests and compare results with simulations.
  • Application – Recommend best practices for modelling plastics (ABS, PA, etc.) in drop test simulations.

We are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s internship/graduation thesis candidate
  • Strong interest in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ANSYS LS-DYNA
  • Enthusiastic about material testing and investigating the mechanical properties of plastics
  • Solid research skills with the ability to analyze complex technical challenges
  • Team player with excellent collaboration and communication skills (English)
  • Highly motivated with a strong drive to deliver practical and impactful results
