The work ranges from development of instruments for the biggest radio telescopes in the world like LOFAR and SKA. The mechanical group is responsible for all the development and design for this type of telescopes in close cooperation with antenna, radio and electronic specialists. Technologies such as using polyester foil (as used for flower packaging) and EPS (Expanded Polystyrene, as used in any ordinary package) together with High Performance Computing cooling for electronic parts are parts of the portfolio. Additionally, mechanical design of parts specifically aimed to be 3D printed belongs to the tasks. 3D printing facilities are in-house. The scope of the job is broad and consist of brainstorming, research, development, design, (FEA) calculations, prototyping, testing and deployment.
Also optical instruments for telescope are in development in a related group NOVA which is developing instruments for the biggest telescope in the world like VLT and E-ELT with several high-end precision mechanics techniques and designs.
You typically work in a project organization and work together with high skilled engineers in several disciplines (Mechanics, Electronics, Software, Production).
You will broaden your insight in technology and instrument development, the design process and by having a hands-on-approach you will learn and experience a lot. No day is the same.
The required education level & specialistation is HBO Werktuigbouwkunde.
