ASTRON is the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. Its mission is to make discoveries in radio astronomy happen, via the development of novel and innovative technologies, the operation of world-class radio astronomy facilities, and the pursuit of fundamental astronomical research.
The ASTRON Research & Development division is responsible for the technical program. The program focuses on innovative instruments for existing telescopes as well as on developing technologies for future observing facilities.
The System Engineering & Project Management (SE&PM) group enables a methodical and structured approach to the realization of radio astronomy facilities. The group provides solutions that best fit customer expectations, stakeholder needs and overall constraints throughout the facility’s life-cycle. Therefore, they bring together all relevant engineering disciplines.
General description of the assignment:
You will contribute to the systems engineering efforts for large facilities such as the upgraded LOFAR 2.0 telescope and more in particular to the definition of the requirements for the system and the subsystems.
In general, we are looking for students within electrical engineering, software engineering, physics or similar who have an interest in the development of scientific instruments.
- Knowledge about systems engineering processes and principles.
