Philips Drachten is one of the biggest development and production centers in Europe within Philips. It is a globally oriented site. On this site, employees from all over the world collaborate enthusiastically on the development of products that improve people’s lives. The Drachten site develops numerous innovative products, such as Senseo coffee machines, Ladyshavers, vacuum cleaners, beard trimmers, hair clippers, Wake-up Lights, and shavers. Besides developing new shavers, Drachten also produces them in a shaver factory that uses cutting-edge production technology to manufacture the latest shavers 24/7. Philips Drachten has 2000 employees from 35 nationalities, including 600 development engineers.


The assignment is about gas sensing in the domain of Personal Health monitoring. Reliable and robust sensors are key when it comes to providing meaningful feedback to consumers.

Earlier studies looked into the types of gases released during metabolism and looked for feasible gas detection principles. A simple test setup has been built and some first experiments have been done.

Now we want to test in a structured way whether gas sensing is attractive for personal health monitoring.


The overall approach is to make yourself familiar with gases and gas sensing/sensors based on the work already done. Next, you will:

collect responses of different gas sensors when exposed to a mixture of gases at health level relevant concentrations,

look for ways how responses could be linked to a personal health condition
