ICD mentioned in Leeuwarder Courant article
The Frisian economy is under pressure. That's according to a recent report by Rabobank, in which economists warn of a further impoverishment of the economic base of the province. The so-called “Frisian paradox” - relatively low incomes but a high sense of happiness - is beginning to tilt.
Urgency for driving economy
According to the report, Friesland lacks sufficient driving economy: innovative sectors with export potential, independent of regional population density. Precisely these are essential for structural growth. Friesland lol that potential does exist, the researchers argue - including in the Innovatiecluster Drachten (ICD). ICD is explicitly mentioned as an example of a region with strong, innovative manufacturing. The call: Invest more in these companies and clusters to sustainably strengthen broad prosperity.
Focus on water, soil and circularity
Rabobank also sees growth opportunities in three sectors: water technology, soil and circularity. With initiatives such as Wetsus and Circular Friesland the province already has a good breeding ground, but action is needed: sharp choices, cooperation and investment in knowledge and capital.
Strong together in the North
The report also appeals to governments and institutions to strengthen cooperation in the Northern Netherlands. “Think beyond the mound,” is the motto. Only through scale and synergy can Friesland capitalize on its innovative strength.
