Visit to radio telescope and insight into high-pressure applications
Applied Physics students from the Van der Waals Study Association of Eindhoven University of Technology visited ASTRON in March. Electrical designer Lesley explained about radio astronomy and shared his knowledge about photonics. The LOFAR telescope with all its technology, from antenna, low-noise amplifiers, filters, A/D conversion to supercomputing, offered a complete overview of all technology in radio telescopes and the physics that go with it. This technique was presented on a 2D screen and the students could also see it live in the lab and outside on the ASTRON test field. In the lab, the students could see the analog photonic link...
