You will be joining the Innovation Team Oral HealthCare R&D department at Philips Drachten. An impactful multi-disciplinary team of experienced and passionate professionals, that works with internal and external teams from all over the globe. This assignment offers you the opportunity to explore and design a novel device concept that uses a safe, energy-driven water treatment process to improve oral hygiene without chemicals.
Your task is to investigate and develop a proof-of-concept prototype for an innovative oral health system that uses a water-based technology to improve dental care. The system should transform regular drinking water into a solution with enhanced hygiene properties through a safe, energy-driven process, suitable for applications such as mouth rinsing or integration into an interdental cleaning device.
Description of assignment
- Literature Review: Explore existing technologies for water activation and their biomedical relevance.
- Concept Development Define design requirements, constraints, and user needs for a safe and effective water-based oral health technology device.
- System Design: Develop a functional architecture for the activation module, including electrode configuration, power supply, safety features and possibly the measurement of water status, e.g. using chemical analysis or other suitable sensors.
- Prototype Building: Create and test a simplified prototype to validate activation time, antibacterial efficacy, and usability.
- Some form of consumer research on concepts and prototype(s)
- Evaluation: Assess performance against oral health standards and propose improvements for user experience.

Please note that the subject is highly confidential and requires signing of NDA like contracts. Presentations might need to be adapted in case they are required to be presented to a general audience.
We are looking for:
Master students who are pursuing Biomedical engineering or related fields and will work on the project for at least 5 months.
To succeed in this role, you have the following skills and experience:
- Affinity with biomedical device design and consumer health technologies.
- Professional skills in English (written and verbal).
- Team player, passionate about results and people.
- Skills in basic electrochemistry, CAD design, prototyping, and experimental design.
- Hands-on mentality, creative and result driven.
- Students open to learn a lot of new competences, like technical subjects, research, development, consumer research, international cooperation in a large-scale company etc.
- Able to work mainly on site (Drachten) for at least 3-4 days per week.
