Sometimes making a diagnosis is very difficult. For example, if symptoms of different diseases are very similar or because it is difficult with the naked eye to distinguish images of benign and malignant tissue. Our high-tech partner ZiuZ With knowledge of visual intelligence and experience with image recognition, develops devices that support doctors in assessing medical images. In this way, ZiuZ tries to contribute to improving healthcare.

NEMO

An example of this is the project NEMO, (Next Move in Movement Disorders). This is a three-year collaborative project between ZiuZ and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). This project focuses on distinguishing hyperkinetic movement disorders: disorders characterized by an excess of involuntary movements, such as tremor, myoclonus, dystonia, tics or chorea. In practice it is often difficult to distinguish between these different types of involuntary movements. These conditions are even difficult to recognize for doctors who are less often confronted with them, but doctors also do not always agree with each other.

machine learning

The goal of Project NEMO is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis tool (CAD tool) that can help doctors distinguish between different types of movement disorders. This is done in part with a smart 3D camera and ‘machine learning’ techniques. Movements and muscle activity are recorded by sensors coupled with artificial intelligence and pattern recognition. Thus, the CAD tool can help doctors identify the right movement disorder in patients.
