News / ICD celebrates 100th Steering Committee meeting at De Sluisfabriek

A special milestone for the Innovatiecluster Drachten (ICD): yesterday saw the 100e steering group meeting place. Since the establishment of the ICD, representatives from the affiliated companies have been meeting every 6 weeks to share knowledge, discuss progress and new initiatives, and work together to further strengthen the high-tech ecosystem in the north of the Netherlands.

We did not want this hundredth meeting to pass unnoticed. That is why the meeting took place at a special location: The Lock Factory in Drachten. A place where history, innovation, and entrepreneurship converge. With that, the location provided a fitting backdrop for this festive edition.

One hundred meetings for collaboration and knowledge sharing

The steering committee is the beating heart of Innovatiecluster Drachten. All 23 member companies are represented on the committee. Together, they set the cluster’s course and are committed to issues such as innovation, knowledge sharing, talent development, and collaboration between education and the business community.

Achieving the 100th consultation underscores the strength of this long-standing collaboration. Thanks to the active involvement of the steering committee members, the ICD has developed into a leading innovation network within the Dutch high-tech sector.

Inspiration from Education and Technology

Prior to the consultation, it was arranged Jolien Drent, project leader and lecturer of the Associate Degree in Industrial Automation and Robotics from NHL Stenden, a presentation on developments in education and the connection to the needs of the business world.

This again made it clear how important the collaboration between educational institutions and companies is for training future technical talent. Especially at a time when the demand for technicians and engineers continues to grow, such connections are of great value.

International Opportunities with MIT

After the consultation, a presentation followed by Stephen Barnes, Managing Director of MIT-UK and MIT-Netherlands. He spoke about the possibilities for exchange between students of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dutch companies.

This international collaboration offers interesting opportunities for knowledge exchange, innovation projects, and talent development. Furthermore, this aligns well with the ICD's ambition to connect companies in the Northern Netherlands with international knowledge networks.

A festive conclusion

Of course, the special nature of this hundredth meeting was also acknowledged. All steering committee members received a unique ICD gift to commemorate this milestone: a special orange ICD hoodie. A fitting gesture, especially considering the start of the Football World Cup this week.

A look into the past and future of the Sluisfabriek

Subsequently, attendees were given insight into the history and current function of De Sluisfabriek. The building once played an important role in the industrial development of Drachten. Today, it offers space for encounter, entrepreneurship, and new initiatives.

The combination of industrial heritage and modern business activity made the location particularly suitable for a meeting that looked both back and forward.

On to the next 100 meetings

The 100th steering group meeting was not only a moment to look back at what has been achieved together, but, more importantly, also a moment to look ahead. With 23 involved companies, strong educational and knowledge partners, and a shared ambition to continue innovating, the ICD continues to build a strong future for the high-tech sector in the north of the Netherlands.

We thank all steering committee members for their years of commitment and look forward to the next 100 meetings full of collaboration, inspiration, and innovation!
