News / ICD celebrates 100th Steering Committee meeting at De Sluisfabriek

A special milestone for the Innovatiecluster Drachten (ICD): yesterday saw the 100th Steering Group Meeting Place. Since its establishment, the ICD has brought together representatives from affiliated companies every 6 weeks to share knowledge, discuss progress and new initiatives, and work together on further strengthening the high-tech ecosystem in the north of the Netherlands.

We didn't want to let this hundredth meeting pass unnoticed. That's why the meeting took place at a special location: The Lock Factory in Drachten. A place where history, innovation, and entrepreneurship come together. With that, the location formed a fitting setting for this festive edition.

One hundred meetings of collaboration and knowledge sharing

The steering committee is the beating heart of Innovatiecluster Drachten. All 23 member companies are represented on the committee. Together, they set the cluster’s course and are committed to issues such as innovation, knowledge sharing, talent development, and collaboration between education and the business community.

Reaching the 100th meeting underlines the strength of this long-standing collaboration. Thanks to the active involvement of the steering committee members, the ICD has developed into a leading innovation network within the Dutch high-tech sector.

Inspiration from education and technology

Prior to the consultation Jolien Drent, project leader and lecturer of the AD Industrial Automation and Robotics program at NHL Stenden, a presentation on developments in education and alignment with business needs.

This again highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and companies for training future technical talent. Especially in a time when the demand for technicians and engineers continues to grow, such connections are of great value.

International Opportunities with MIT

After the meeting, there was a presentation by Stephen Barnes, Managing Director of MIT-UK and MIT-Netherlands. He spoke about the exchange opportunities for students from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dutch companies.

This international collaboration offers interesting opportunities for knowledge exchange, innovation projects, and talent development. Moreover, this aligns well with the ICD's ambition to connect businesses in North Netherlands with international knowledge networks.

A festive conclusion

Of course, attention was also paid to the special nature of this hundredth meeting. All steering group members received a unique ICD gift as a reminder of this milestone: a special orange ICD hoodie. A fitting gesture, partly due to the start of the World Cup this week.

A glimpse into the past and the future of De Sluisfabriek

Following this, attendees were given insight into the history and current function of De Sluisfabriek. Once, the building played an important role in the industrial development of Drachten. Today, it offers space for meetings, entrepreneurship, and new initiatives.

The combination of industrial heritage and modern business activity made the location particularly fitting for a meeting that looked both back and forward.

On to the next 100 meetings

The 100th steering group meeting was not only a moment to reflect on what has been achieved together, but above all a moment to look forward. With 23 involved companies, strong educational and knowledge partners, and a shared ambition to continue innovating, the ICD continues to build a strong future for the high-tech sector in the North of the Netherlands.

We thank all steering committee members for their years of commitment and look forward to the next 100 meetings full of collaboration, inspiration, and innovation!
