On Thursday, October 9, the ICD | Innovatiecluster Drachten organized another inspiring Tech Safari for students. No fewer than 45 students participated in this excursion, which took them to two leading companies in Drachten: BD Kiestra and Philips.

A day full of technology and inspiration
The day began at BD Kiestra, where the students got an insight into the world of Total Lab Automation. After a general introduction, participants dove deeper into the technology behind modular design and the principles of DfA, DfM and DfS. Moreover, a lively discussion ensued about the role of engineers in the development process.
During the tour of the Manufacturing Plant, students saw up close how digitization and modular construction come together in manufacturing. BD Kiestra stressed the importance of cooperation between students, teachers and industry:
“Engineers have a central role in a company's success. The connection between education, research and industry is invaluable.”
From laboratory to shaver
After a well-prepared lunch, the group left for Philips Drachten. There the students were given presentations on the latest production techniques and automation. During the tour it became clear how efficiently the production of razors is organized - from design to assembly.
Student responses were enthusiastic:
“It was interesting to see such big players based so close to home.”
“The staff really took the time to answer our questions, which made it very educational.”
“The tour at Philips showed us all the techniques to produce a shaver in an efficient way.”
Well organized and inspiring
The participants appreciated the good organization of the day. The bus trip, presentations, tours and lunch together formed an inspiring experience. The students indicated that they gained a valuable insight into a field of work that was new to many.
“Our retired guide at Philips who just tours the factory for the love of the game was a definite highlight.”
Building technology together in Drachten
With this safari, the Innovatiecluster Drachten once again demonstrates the value of collaboration between education and high-tech companies. Companies like Philips Drachten and BD Kiestra offer students not only knowledge but also inspiration to shape their future in engineering.
The ICD looks back with pride on this successful day and looks forward to another field trip or collaboration with students and companies from the region.
