PHOTONIS is a leading multinational high-technology group, manufacturing electro-optic components used in the detection of ions, electrons and photons. We innovate and engineer quality components for integration into a variety of applications such as night vision optics, digital cameras, mass spectrometry, physics research, space exploration and many others.
At PHOTONIS Netherlands, based in Roden, we develop digital cameras for use under low light conditions.
One of our sensors, the image intensifier, makes use of a photocathode to transform light into electrons. These electrons are accelerated towards a microchannel plate, where the electrons are multiplied. The resulting multiplied electron stream is accelerated towards a phosphor screen to transform the electrons back into photons. This sensor enables the detection of single photons. For extremely low light conditions, the so-called dark current of the photocathode starts to play a role. This dark current can be reduced drastically by cooling the photocathode.
The purpose of this internship is to investigate the possibilities for an efficient manner to cool the photocathode, while preventing condensation of the input window. This will require a good understanding of Physics, knowledge of simulation techniques and hands-on experimentation.
