Ventura Systems is a manufacturer of innovative door systems and a leader in the development, sales, production and aftersales of automatic door systems for public transport worldwide. A lot of documentation is required for the development of door systems. Both for the development process and manuals for end users. To make the documentation manageable, we have a documentation framework. This separates content and layout, so that the layout and styling of the documents can be adjusted at any time. This documentation framework is based on BIRT Eclipse and Microsoft Word.

What are you going to do?

The assignment that Ventura Systems has in mind is the following: the framework has been considerably expanded over the years. Many functions can currently only be edited by adjusting fields directly in a database. Due to an increase in the number of users of the framework, it is desirable that new functions are added to the existing tool (Document Explorer). The following functions are not yet included:

• Add new document.
• Adding new project member.
• Add new document type.
• Adjust document preparer, verifier and approver.
• Configure project member skill and roles.

In addition, improvements are also required in the document generation process, in which we generate MS Word documents using BIRT Eclipse. In Word, the document is further automatically edited with the help of a macro to achieve the desired end result. The desire is to make this process less dependent on Word. This can be done by making certain adjustments to the document templates used and by making changes to the BIRT Eclipse code.
